The main picture for June depicts the arrival of the SHETLAND TRADER on the pm tide, 31st May, 2009 from Terneuzen, with a cargo of fertiliser for the farms in SW England.
The 2386 dwt vessel was delivered from the RSW Rosslauer Schiffswerft GmbH & Co. KG, Rosslau, River Elbe, Germany, in 1992 as yard number 233. The vessel was named "Mars" on launching and was time chartered to Walter Lass, Hamburg, on delivery. In 2007 she became the "Shetland Trader" under the Barbados flag. The vessel is managed by Faversham Ships Ltd., Ryde, Isle of Wight.
Dimensions of the vessel are 74.94m loa, beam 11.40m, with a max draught of 4.35m. GT 1515 and NT 696. Prime mover is a Cummins KT19M diesel engine, with a service speed of 11knots. The air draught in ballast is 6.65m.
Teignmouth is a clay port. Thousands of tonnes of ball clay and china clay are exported from the port every year to Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Italy and other Mediterranean and Black Sea ports.
In July 2007 the port broke its own record of loading clay in one day. It totalled just under 8,000 tonnes spread amongst four vessels.
Ball clays and china clays are used in the ceramics and pottery industry. Over ninety per cent of the clays mined in the Bovey Basin are for export. Imports into the port are animal feedstuffs for the local farms, fertilisers, timber, and aggregates.
In 2005 and 2006 the No. 1 Dock was filled in and the quays straightened out for berthing the larger coastal vessels of the 21st Century. Including the Town Quay, 4 vessels over 90m in length can berth safely.
Ship arrivals and departures will be over a monthly period, and deleted after the 5th day of the next month. If you would like a monthly copy please get in touch via the "Leave a message" below. Currently arrivals and departures go back to 1996, and we are currently working from 1982 to 1995.
Teignmouth and Shaldon are places to visit if you are on holiday. Use the Ferry (foot passengers only) to cross the mouth of the Teign. The Ferry crossing has been in operation since the 13th Century. Note the black and white design on the gunwales of the ferries emulating the ships of the line in Elizabethan times. Elizabeth I bestowed Royal Patronage on West Teignmouth.
Bitton House in west Teignmouth is a place to visit. Today it is the headquarters of Teignmouth Council. It was once the home of Sir Edward Pellew, Lord Exmouth, until about 1833. The cannons outside were brought back from the siege of Algiers in 1816. The Orangery close by in the grounds dates from 1842.
There are walks along both sides of the river towards Newton Abbot. Picturesque villages like Bishopsteignton, Coombe-in-Teignhead and Stoke-in- Teignhead are worth visiting. Even the Stover Canal once used to transport clay from the clay pits in the Bovey Basin to the port is under early renovation.
"Here all the summer I could stay
For theres Bishops Teign
And Kings Teign and Coombe
At the clear Teign Head where close by the stream
You may have your cream
All spread apon Barley bread" - John Keats.
